I woke up this morning wondering about people who have hit the 100 year milestone and considered whether I would want that for myself. What blue zone elders seem to have in common are naturally integrated healthy lifestyles

  • They move constantly as part of daily habit through walks, gardening, visits, housework, cooking etc.
  • They have stress reduction habits naturally built into their lives (meditation, prayer, napping, ancestor veneration and Happy Hour!)
  • They have a sense of purpose
  • They maintain and appreciate close relationships with loved ones and friends
  • They eat a mostly plant based diet with whole carbs, occasional wine (yay!) and they eat slowly and intentionally, stopping before they feel full. Larger meals early in the day and light dinners

This seems like a much happier way to age than chasing eternal youth through obsessive workouts, cosmetic surgery and rabbit food…and only requires some small habit changes.

Would you want to live to 100?

Talking to Parents About Aging: Breaking the Silence

Talking to parents about aging is uncomfortable. There can be several elephants in the room all at once; admission that death may be around the corner, accusations of trying to stick them in a home or get their money, refusal to ‘listen to reason’ about diminishing capacities. The CBC’s ‘The Current‘ has recently come out
